HISTORY OF THE THAI CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

The first Chamber of Commerce was established in the late 14th century in Marseille, France by prominent business leaders. Its purpose was to ensure ongoing economic vitality and secure benefits for merchant members.

The organization played an important role in protecting the business interests of the Marseillan merchants. From that point onwards, merchants and businessmen from around the world have come together to establish similar organizations. These organizations aim to promote economic growth in trade, agriculture, industry, and finance within their respective countries. The goal is to maximize the benefits and advantages for all members involved.

In that period, the landscape of commerce in Thailand was only conducted by individual traders. Merchants rarely collaborated together, and when they did only in a small insular group in the same industry under the guidance and supervision by the government bodies. Until in B.E. 2475, the concept of the chamber of commerce was finally conceived and brought forth into fruition by the joint effort of forward-thinking merchants and scholars under the leadership of Mr.Lek Komes. His vision was that since many countries around the world had their own chamber of commerce to facilitate conducting business which greatly benefited trade and commerce of their nations; therefore, all merchants in Thailand should come together to organize as a single institution to have a negotiation power with the government.

An Idea only manifests in completion through action. This statement truly captured the first chapter of the Thai Chamber of Commerce. Mr.Jear Penparkskun further explained this period in Mr.Lek Komes’s funeral memorial book, printed in 5th  May B.E. 2505. He passionately admired Mr.Lek Komes for his contributions and efforts in the vanguard of establishing this organization. After Mr.Lek Komes had heard the plea from fellow merchants who were taken advantage of by both local and internal influences, he was the sole person who dedicated his life to the founding of the Chamber of Commerce of Thailand and gave his private residence to be used as the office of the organization

Afterwards on 6th May B.E. 2475 was the year when the first official meeting took place to discuss the establishment of the Thai Chamber of Commerce. The meeting was held at Mr. Lek Kome's residence on Captain Bush Lane, with six founding members in attendance.

  • Phya Pirompakdee (Boonrawd Sethaputra)
  • Mr.Lek Komes
  • Mr.Jear Penparkskun
  • Mr.Tongdee Issarakul
  • Mr.Yong-Hua Sae-Hun
  •  Mr.Heng Paksuwan

In this meeting, in addition to agreeing on the establishment of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, the consensus was to select "Siam Chamber of Commerce" as the official English name for the organization.
